Auxvasse Farmer Explores Methods To Cut Down On Input Costs

Costs for fertilizer, herbicides, and other critical inputs continue to weigh on farm operations.  For one farmer in Callaway County, that’s led him to experiment with creating his own supplies.  Luke Linnenbringer of Auxvasse tells Regional Radio he’s worked to reduce his use of external inputs for the past several years, not only as a cost-cutting measure, but also for increased sustainability.

Linnenbringer uses a variety of waste products to create his fertilizer, including eggs from his laying hens that are not suitable for sale, and byproducts from processed fish caught in the Missouri River.  He suggests farmers wanting to try something different should do their own research and then begin by reviewing their inputs.

Luke Linnenbringer of Auxvasse also raises beef cattle, with rowcrops grown to feed his livestock.  He was a presenter at last weekend’s annual meeting of the Missouri Farmers Union in Columbia.
