Prospective poultry handlers are encouraged to attend a workshop Thursday evening in Brunswick to learn about proper management of egg-laying hens.  The workshop will be led by University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist Heather Conrow, who tells Regional Radio about the increasing interest in backyard laying hens.

Conrow says the three-hour workshop will detail many of the basics, including proper handling techniques, biosecurity, and determining egg quality, as well as the steps producers need to take if they want to market their product.

Heather Conrow of MU Extension will co-host the backyard laying hens workshop with experts from Lincoln University’s Cooperative Extension program.  The workshop takes place Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Saint Boniface Church in Brunswick and is $30 per person, with immediate family members able to attend for an additional $10.  To register, contact the MU Extension office in Chariton County at 660-288-3239.
