Patience is Important for Michigan’s Sugarbeet Producers this Planting Season

Michigan’s sugarbeet producers will soon be hitting the fields to begin the 2024 planting season.

Brice Stine, Central District Agronomy Manager with Michigan Sugar Company, says it’s very early in the planting season for Michigan’s sugarbeet producers.

“We’re still kind of on the early side since typically, most sugar beets are planted in that April 15th to 20th timeframe, so we’re still a little bit ahead of that normal planting season,” says Stine.  “We were able to plant about 50 acres in Ithaca on March 15th, so we were able to get planters out and moving. We’re still well under one-percent planted, but it’s getting the planters out, getting the dust knocked off of them so when we do get that nice 10-day stretch in the middle of April, a lot of sugarbeets can be planted in a very small window.”

Stine says that Michigan’s sugarbeet producers should remember that patience is a virtue this planting season.

“You can definitely see growers who push that envelope and that crop will struggle throughout the season, so being patient early on we’ll pay dividends if conditions are perfect at planting,” he says.
