Edwards: Frost depth in South Dakota sinking deeper after recent cold spell

ABERDEEN, S.D.–South Dakota is dealing with deep frost after the recent cold spell.

Climatologist Laura Edwards says the frost is nearly five feet deep in some areas like the northwestern part of the state, and in the Lemmon and Webster areas.

Those depths are determined by the South Dakota State University Mesonet system and the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration.

Edwards said frost and cold can cause underground water lines and other utility lines to crack or break. But it may also be good for crops come this spring as the frost can trap and retain water that could be a big help.
